June 18, 2009Workers filed railroad injury lawsuit against train companies

Four former railroad workers have filed lawsuits against the companies where they worked, alleging that they were exposed to a number of toxic substances on the job, including asbestos. Gerald Abbott, Carl Cory, Ronald Franklin and Thomas Wright allege that they developed asbestosis as a result of the asbestos exposure they suffered.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was used for a number of industrial applications for many years due to its heat-resistant properties. Some products that were manufactured with asbestos include brakes, home insulation and industrial parts.

Although the use of asbestos has declined because of the health risks associated with exposure, many workers or other individuals who lived or worked around asbestos are only beginning to be diagnosed with illnesses that we caused by exposure that occurred decades ago. One of these illnesses is mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that can attack the lining of the heart, chest or abdomen. Many patients only begin to develop the symptoms of mesothelioma decades after they were exposed to asbestos.

In their lawsuit, the four railroad workers allege that the companies where they worked failed to protect them from asbestos and the other hazardous substances around which they worked, which lead to their health problems. The four workers are seeking $1.5 million in damages for their railroad injuries.
